CHAPTER 11

Wiz pulled inside the garage with his bike and parked it in his spot. Walking out of the building, Vasile and Nolan were standing there waiting for him.

“How about we go somewhere that we can talk?” Nolan asked.

Nodding, Wiz softly said, “Yeah, okay.”

When his two men turned to walk towards the house, Wiz stopped them. “Not there.”

Both men turned around and looked confused. Wiz just shrugged. “I love my family, but trust me they are really fucking nosy. If we’re going to talk, I say we go somewhere that there aren’t prying ears.”

Vasile smiled, “That sounds good.”

“So, where should we go?” Nolan asked. “I don’t have my place anymore, since Pit insisted I take a room here.”

“My place is out, since Ruse and I share a house, and he’s already gone home,” Vasile said.

Pepper popped out of Vasile’s pocket, “I have an idea. We can go to the apartment Miss Mertal was supposed to have as her own. Remember, Wiz. We got it all ready for her, but she and Clara really liked having the company of the other, and decided to stay in Clara’s apartment.”

Wiz smiled, “Good idea, Pepper. Let’s go.”

They started walking to the apartment building when Wiz heard his name being called. He turned around to see Miss Mertal rushing to him, holding two large bags in her hands.

“Miss Mertal, is everything alright?” Wiz asked in concern.

“Oh y-yes,” Miss Mertal panted. “I… I kne… knew you ha… hadn’t…”

Wiz held onto the older woman, and gave her his most reassuring smile. “Why don’t you catch your breath and then tell me what’s on your mind.”

Miss Mertal shoved the bags at an unexpecting Vasile, then turned and patted Wiz’s cheek. “You are always a sweet boy.”

Wiz wanted to laugh, since he was about four hundred and fifty years older than her, and she always called him boy or young man… just like Clara still did. Maybe it was because he still looked like he was in his late twenties… early thirties.

“I knew you hadn’t eaten before you left the café and you often go without eating. That isn’t good for you, so when I heard you come back into town, I had the cook make you all up something. It’s the same thing you ordered earlier, so I knew it was something you’d eat,” Miss Mertal said with a gentle smile.

Smiling back at her, Wiz leaned in and kissed her cheek. “Thank you, Miss Mertal. We appreciate it, and I can promise you I will enjoy every bite. I’m starving.”

She patted his hand then smiled at the others. “You take good care of my boy here.”

“We will, ma’am,” Vasile said with a nod.

Miss Mertal gave him a once-over. “I know Nolan here, but I don’t know you.”

“Detective Vasile Jorin. I’m… uh…” Vasile looked at Nolan and then Wiz, as if unsure what to say.

Nolan looked at Wiz with a raised brow, and just as Wiz opened his mouth to speak, Pepper popped out of the man’s pocket. “He’s one of our sentiences.
